We’ve had many customers purchase custom stamps specifically to stamp kraft paper bags. Whether you’re a small boutique, a fast food restaurant, or a café, a branded paper bag is a simple and stylish way to package your products. In fact, brown paper bags are one of the most affordable and effective ways to elevate your packaging. With a custom stamp, a plain kraft bag can be transformed into professional branding in seconds.
However, sometimes we receive emails from customers concerned about how their stamp impression looks on kraft bags. In most cases, the issue isn’t the stamp itself, rather it comes down to placement, surface and pressure. Gift bags aren’t perfectly flat so understanding how folds and seams affect the imprint makes all the difference in achieving an even result.
Why Brown Paper Gift Bags Aren’t Fully Flat
Most kraft paper gift bags include:
- Side gusset folds
- A bottom seam fold
- Handle attachment patches
Even if the bag is labeled “8 inches wide,” the entire width is not stamp-safe. The flattest most reliable area is the center portion of the front panel, away from folds and seams.

Measure the True Flat Area (Not the Bag Size):
- Lay the bag flat on a hard surface.
- Measure the width between the two vertical folds.
- Measure the height between the bottom seam and the handle reinforcement area.
- Subtract approximately ½ inch from both dimensions to allow for safe margins.

How to Get a Clean Stamp Impression on Kraft Paper Bags:
Brown paper is slightly textured so pressure control matters. Make sure to do the following to achieve an even look:
- Stamp on a hard, level surface (a clean uncluttered table)
- Apply even pressure across the entire stamp (handles are handy but for larger stamps, sometimes it’s nice to be able to apply pressure evenly across the top surface)
- Lift straight up (no rocking)
What if I need to go over the seams and folds?
Sometimes you just want to go bold, or stamp multiple sized bags. Even if your stamp is wider than the flat area between the side folds, you can still get a clean impression by adding internal support inside the bag.

The Solution: Insert a Firm Board Inside the Bag
To effectively use a bigger stamp, you need to make sure the folds aren’t underneath your surface area. You’ll need a thick chipboard, clipboard, or a thin book that is slightly smaller than your bag but still fits inside nicely so you can get as much surface area as possible.
- Open the gift bag fully.
- Insert the board so it presses firmly against the entire inside surface and make sure it’s placed over top of the side folds and bottom fold.
- Stamp on a hard surface with steady, even pressure.
By placing the board over the folds, you reduce the height difference between the front panel and the folded gussets which creates a nice flat surface.
When you size your stamp correctly and work with the bag’s structure you’ll achieve clean, even impressions that make your branded kraft packaging look professional.
